Venedik, Kuzey İtalya'nın doğusunda Adriyatik denizi kıyılarında, İtalya'ya bağlı ada şehir. Karaya 4 kilometre uzunluğunda kara ve demiryolu köprüsü ile bağlanır. Yaklaşık 118 adacık üzerine kuruludur. Venedik'te adacıkları birbirinden ayıran 170 kanal ve birbirine bağlayan 400 köprü bulunur.
Venedik, tarih boyunca Avrupa´nın en önemli ticaret başkentlerinden biri olmuştur. Venedikliler, Türklerden ve Araplardan öğrendikleri sayı sistemi ile ticaret aritmetiğini en üst düzeye çıkarmışlar ve bu nedenle bütün Avrupalı tacirler bu aritmetiği öğrenebilmek için Venedik'te açılan birçok okula gelerek eğitim almışlardır. Venedik nüfusu o dönemlerde 300.000 civarında iken günümüzde 72.000'e kadar düşmüştür ve halen azalmaktadır.
